Electromagnetic Field Imaging

Electromagnetic fields created by active circuits can be imaged by scanning an open-ended probe and imaging the linear or nonlinear power received. This microscope can be used to image the electric fields above a microwave circuit sample. One can also measure nonlinear signal generation standing waves, such as those arising from intermodulation in superconductors. Below is an image of the intermodualtion distortion distribution inside a high-Tc superconducting resonator (see Ref. 71). These images give insight into the features that cause enhanced nonlinear response, for example.
